Treatment: Natural/untreated

Blue tourmaline, or indicolite, presents as unpolished, natural mineral crystals characterized by elongated, prismatic columns with distinct vertical striations and trigonal cross-sections. Ranging in hue from delicate cyan to deep, oceanic navy, these untreated specimens preserve their raw matrix and terminal faces, making them highly sought after by mineral collectors and bespoke jewelry designers. The un-faceted stones retain a rugged, earthy aesthetic while still exhibiting the mineral's trademark hardness and vibrant pleochroism, where shifting angles reveal subtle variations in color depth.

Rough blue tourmaline should be handled carefully to preserve its crystal structure and natural color. For cleaning, use lukewarm water, mild phosphate-free soap, and a soft brush to gently remove dirt, while avoiding ultrasonic cleaners, steam, bleach, ammonia, and acidic products that may worsen fractures or damage the specimen. Keep the stone away from sudden temperature changes and strong heat, as thermal shock can cause cracking, and limit prolonged exposure to intense sunlight or display lighting to reduce the risk of color changes. Since tourmaline is pyroelectric and can attract dust when heated, occasional gentle dusting may be necessary. For storage, keep each specimen separately in a padded pouch, soft cloth, or lined mineral box to prevent scratches and impact damage from other minerals..

Faceting & Design Recommendations:

Blue tourmaline (indicolite) should be carefully evaluated for color zoning, pleochroism, transparency, inclusions, fractures, and crystal orientation before cutting, with the rough positioned to maximize its richest blue face-up color, clarity, brilliance, and yield. Brilliant, cushion, oval, emerald, baguette, scissors, and modified brilliant cuts can showcase its strong color, while elongated designs can efficiently follow the natural prismatic crystal shape; heavily included or irregular rough may benefit from custom cuts. With hardness of 7–7.5 on the Mohs scale, making tourmaline suitable for most jewelry applications with proper care. Careful orientation is essential because pleochroism can significantly change the apparent color, and for suitable indicolite rough, positioning the table parallel to the c-axis can help prevent an overly dark or “closed” appearance. Use controlled pressure, fine grinding laps, gradual polishing, and good cooling to reduce stress, chipping, and splitting around inclusions or fractures, while avoiding thin girdles, sharp corners, excessive heat, direct flame, and sudden temperature changes.

Every parcel feels handpicked. The color response under UV was stunning, and knowing the material is genuinely untreated makes all the difference to my work.
