Treatment: Natural/untreated

Red garnet is a ubiquitous and durable silicate mineral prized for its deep, fiery crimson hues, which range from the dark purplish tones of almandine to the bright pomegranate-red of pyrope. Because it forms abundantly in metamorphic and igneous rocks worldwide, it is one of the most accessible and affordable gemstones available, requiring no synthetic laboratory production or artificial color enhancements. With a high rating of 6.5 to 7.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, it offers exceptional resilience for everyday jewelry while holding a rich history as a protective talisman across ancient civilizations.

Authenticity Guaranteed

Red garnet is relatively hard and durable, although with a Mohs hardness of 6.5–7.5, rough specimens can still be damaged by impact, heat, or improper cleaning. For routine care, loosen dirt with lukewarm soapy water and gently remove residue using a soft brush before rinsing and drying the specimen thoroughly. Garnets attached to matrix should be cleaned gradually with gentle tools rather than aggressive machinery, and any rotary work should be performed at low speed with adequate cooling. Avoid ultrasonic or steam cleaning, strong acids, harsh chemicals, and sudden temperature changes, as these may worsen existing fractures or damage natural surfaces. For long-term preservation, keep each specimen individually padded and separated from harder minerals and protect it from household chemicals, cosmetics, and physical impacts.

Faceting & Design Recommendations:

Rough red garnet should be carefully examined for deep red color, saturation, transparency, zoning, inclusions, fractures, and crystal growth before cutting, then oriented to maximize vibrant face-up color, brilliance, yield, and weight retention; because garnet is singly refractive, pleochroism is not a major concern. Brilliant, cushion, oval, round, pear, radiant, or emerald cuts work well, but strongly saturated material may require slightly shallower pavilion angles or adjusted designs to prevent dark “blackout,” especially in larger stones. With a hardness of about 7–7.5 and no distinct cleavage, garnet is durable but can chip along conchoidal fractures, so use fine-grit laps, light pressure, and controlled polishing around inclusions. Avoid thin girdles, sharp corners, excessive heat, sudden temperature changes, and direct flame, with cold-dopping preferred to reduce thermal-shock risk.

No treatments, no shortcuts, no filler. What you see in our listings is exactly what arrives at your door genuine natural material selected for its response, transparency, and cutting potential, packed and weighed with the same care a maker would expect.

It's a standard built for independent creators and collectors who value provenance as much as beauty the foundation of everything we sell.

Every parcel feels handpicked. The color response under UV was stunning, and knowing the material is genuinely untreated makes all the difference to my work.
