Rough sapphire is exceptionally hard and durable at Mohs 9, but its natural crystal faces, fractures, inclusions, and matrix attachments still require careful handling. Clean it gently with lukewarm soapy water and a soft brush, using controlled water pressure for stubborn dirt. For heavy clay or iron staining, specialized cleaners such as oxalic acid or Iron Out may be used cautiously, provided the material is compatible and properly rinsed afterward. Avoid sudden temperature changes, open flames, harsh chemicals on uncertain material, and impacts that could exploit internal fractures. Store each crystal separately in a soft pouch or padded compartment to protect its natural surfaces and prevent scratches or damage to other specimens.

Faceting & Design Recommendations:

Rough sapphire should be carefully examined under bright natural and artificial light for color zoning, pleochroism, transparency, inclusions, fractures, silk, crystal orientation, and possible treatment history, then oriented to maximize the most attractive face-up color, clarity, brilliance, and yield; for blue sapphire, identifying the c-axis and orienting the table appropriately can help avoid undesirable greenish-blue or overly dark color. Brilliant, mixed, cushion, oval, round, pear, emerald, and custom cuts are suitable depending on the rough, while heavily included or irregular material may benefit from designs that preserve weight and natural character. Pavilion angles of about 39° or greater can help reduce windowing, while controlled pressure and careful polishing are essential because sapphire’s exceptional hardness of 9 and directional properties can make cutting and polishing demanding. Avoid thin girdles, sharp corners, aggressive cutting, excessive heat, sudden temperature changes, and direct flame, as heat or pressure can expand fractures and inclusions; use proper eye protection and dust control during cutting.

Every parcel we offer begins at the source. We work directly with trusted miners and lapidaries across Afghanistan, Myanmar, and beyond inspecting each lot of rough by hand under both daylight and UV to confirm color, clarity, and authentic character before it ever reaches your bench.

No treatments, no shortcuts, no filler. What you see in our listings is exactly what arrives at your door genuine natural material selected for its response, transparency, and cutting potential, packed and weighed with the same care a maker would expect.

It's a standard built for independent creators and collectors who value provenance as much as beauty the foundation of everything we sell.

Every parcel feels handpicked. The color response under UV was stunning, and knowing the material is genuinely untreated makes all the difference to my work.
