Treatment: Natural/untreated

Rough purple garnet, typically encompassing varieties like rhodolite and almandine, occurs in the isometric crystal system as deeply saturated, translucent to opaque fragments featuring a distinct glassy luster and irregular or conchoidal fracture lines. In its unpolished state, these stones frequently appear as chunky, rounded dodecahedral or trapezohedral crystals, or as angular matrix-embedded pieces displaying rich, royal-purple to violet-red hues mixed with natural earthy inclusions.

Rough purple garnet, including rhodolite and purple-red almandine-pyrope, is relatively durable but can be damaged by impacts, thermal shock, and harsh chemicals. Clean it gently with lukewarm soapy water, a soft brush, and thorough rinsing, then air-dry or pat dry with a soft cloth. Avoid ultrasonic or steam cleaners, acids, bleach, abrasives, and prolonged soaking, especially when the garnet is attached to a fragile matrix. Handle the rough carefully to prevent chipping or cracking, keep it away from household chemicals and cosmetics, and store it separately in a padded, soft-lined container in a cool, dry place away from intense direct sunlight.

Faceting & Design Recommendations:

Rough purple garnet should be carefully examined for violet-to-purple color, transparency, zoning, inclusions, fractures, and internal growth features, then oriented to maximize rich face-up color, brilliance, and weight retention; because garnet is singly refractive, pleochroism is not a major concern. Brilliant, Portuguese, cushion, oval, round, and mixed high-facet cuts can enhance its high refractive index and flashes, while pavilion depth should be controlled to prevent dark “blackout” in strongly colored or larger stones. With a hardness of about 7–7.5 and no distinct cleavage, purple garnet is durable but can chip along conchoidal fractures, so use fine-grit laps, light controlled pressure, and careful polishing around inclusions. Avoid excessive heat, sudden temperature changes, direct flame, and aggressive cutting, with cold-dopping preferred to reduce thermal-shock risk.

No treatments, no shortcuts, no filler. What you see in our listings is exactly what arrives at your door genuine natural material selected for its response, transparency, and cutting potential, packed and weighed with the same care a maker would expect.

It's a standard built for independent creators and collectors who value provenance as much as beauty the foundation of everything we sell.

Every parcel feels handpicked. The color response under UV was stunning, and knowing the material is genuinely untreated makes all the difference to my work.
