Treatment: Natural/untreated

Rough Kunzite is a pink to violet gemstone discovered in 1902 and is the most well-known member of the spodumene mineral family. It is admired for its excellent clarity, romantic colors, and strong pleochroism, which allows it to display different colors from different angles. Often called the “evening stone,” kunzite can fade when exposed to direct sunlight for long periods. Its colors come from traces of manganese, and while it is somewhat rare, highly saturated colors are the most uncommon. Kunzite has a Mohs hardness of 6.5–7, a glass-like luster, a monoclinic crystal structure, and can range from transparent to translucent. It may also show orange-pink phosphorescence and strong pleochroism in pink, violet, and colorless shades.

Rough kunzite requires careful handling because its exposed cleavage planes make it especially vulnerable to splitting, cracking, and chipping. It should be cleaned by soaking it briefly in lukewarm water with mild soap and gently brushing along its natural grooves with a soft brush, while avoiding heat, steam, ultrasonic cleaners, and harsh chemicals. To preserve its natural pink-to-violet color, it should be kept away from direct sunlight and strong UV lighting, which can cause permanent fading. For storage, the specimen should be individually wrapped in a soft cloth and kept in a padded container where it cannot roll, collide with other minerals, or experience sudden impacts.

Faceting & Design Recommendations:

Rough kunzite (spodumene) requires careful orientation and gentle cutting because of its strong pleochroism, distinct cleavage, moderate hardness of 6.5–7, and sensitivity to heat and light. Before faceting, examine the rough for color zoning, transparency, inclusions, fractures, and cleavage, then orient the table perpendicular to the c-axis when appropriate to maximize its desirable pink, lilac, or violet face-up color. Cushion, emerald, oval, radiant, pear, and other deep step or mixed cuts are suitable because they preserve color and light return while reducing structural stress. Use fine or worn laps, low speeds, and minimal steady pressure to prevent chipping or splitting along its cleavage planes, and use cold-dopping methods to avoid thermal shock. After cutting, protect kunzite from impacts, scratches, ultrasonic or steam cleaning, harsh chemicals, and prolonged sunlight or UV exposure, which can fade its color

Every parcel feels handpicked. The color response under UV was stunning, and knowing the material is genuinely untreated makes all the difference to my work.
