Treatment: Natural/untreated

Spinel is an isometric mineral that naturally crystallizes as octahedrons (two four-sided pyramids glued base-to-base, resembling tiny glowing diamonds) or flat, triangular twin crystals with rounded edges. Unlike elongated hexagonal beryl crystals, rough spinel often appears as smooth, pebble-like blocks or distinct octahedrons embedded in metamorphic marble or alluvial river gravels. Renowned for its exceptional durability and vibrant array of colors—ranging from fiery reds and pinks to rich blues and purples—gem-quality spinel rough is prized for its high natural clarity and lack of treatment.

Rough spinel is durable, with a Mohs hardness of 8 and good toughness, but it still needs gentle care to protect its sharp crystal edges and possible internal fractures. It can be cleaned with lukewarm water, mild dish soap, and a soft brush, while ultrasonic and steam cleaners, harsh chemicals, and sudden temperature changes should be avoided because they may damage the crystal. Rough specimens should be stored individually in soft cloth or separate compartments to prevent scratches and chipped edges, especially when stored near harder gemstones. Prolonged exposure to intense sunlight should also be limited, as certain pink or violet spinel varieties may experience color fading.

Faceting & Design Recommendations:

Spinel is a durable gemstone with a Mohs hardness of about 8, high refractive index, and no distinct cleavage, making it excellent for faceting, but its conchoidal fracture and possible internal inclusions or strain require careful handling. Before cutting, inspect the rough under magnification for color, transparency, zoning, fractures, silk, and negative crystals, then select an orientation that maximizes color, brilliance, clarity, and yield; because spinel is singly refractive, pleochroic orientation is not a major concern. Brilliant, mixed, oval, cushion, round, pear, and step cuts work well, with slightly deeper pavilions helping enhance color, brilliance, and dispersion, while heavily included or irregular rough may suit custom designs. Use fine-grit laps, appropriate speeds, coolant, and light, steady pressure to prevent chipping, plucking, and stress fractures, while avoiding excessive heat, sudden temperature changes, hot dopping, and direct flame.

No treatments, no shortcuts, no filler. What you see in our listings is exactly what arrives at your door genuine natural material selected for its response, transparency, and cutting potential, packed and weighed with the same care a maker would expect.

It's a standard built for independent creators and collectors who value provenance as much as beauty the foundation of everything we sell.

Every parcel feels handpicked. The color response under UV was stunning, and knowing the material is genuinely untreated makes all the difference to my work.
